"Static" : Static was my first surrealist film and attempt at constructing narrative through the use of symbolism. The story mimicked my own situation at the time of writing this film, like most people at one point in their lives, I was suffering "writers block", so I used that as the imputous to create a story about what its like when you try and push yourself to come up with something, the stress it causes, the anxiety, the restlessness and eventually exhuastion. With exhuastion comes sleep and as the theory of symbolism in dreams and there surreal quality is already so pervasive, the film became the story of a young man, falling asleep and dreaming about his situation and feelings. I had studied David Lynch as a surrealist practioner and had always been a fan of his work on Twin Peaks, specifically the spin off movie "Twin Peaks : Fire Walk With Me" and the final scene in "the red room". Borrowing from the rich visual imagery of such films and incorporating my passion for close up magic/street magic, the film followed his dream process and his subsequent "break through".
